Robbery Suspect Arrested and Convicted
On October 22nd, 2018, Montebello Police Officers received a call for service regarding an armed robbery that had just occurred at Cruizer’s Express Car Wash (740 Washington Blvd.). The suspect pulled a white SUV up to the employee window, exited the driver’s seat, and, while armed, forcefully removed the cash register. The vehicle then fled the scene. Officers responded and were unable to locate the suspect vehicle. Officer Luis Martinez was able to review video surveillance footage of the robbery. In the video, he could see the face of the suspect and was able to obtain the license plate of the suspect vehicle. Upon conducting research on the license plate, Officer Martinez discovered he had prior contact with the suspect and was able to positively identify the suspect with the help of the robbery victim.
Montebello Detectives immediately conducted a follow-up investigation and conducted surveillance at several locations linked to the suspect, who was identified as Edward JOLLA. Late that same night, Detective Antista observed JOLLA walking down the street in the 1400 block of Montebello Blvd. and he was detained without incident. The suspect vehicle was located half a block away and a search warrant was authored in order to search it. Detectives located clothing matching what JOLLA was wearing during the robbery as well as various denominations of U.S. currency hidden within the vehicle. The gun was never recovered.
During questioning, JOLLA admitted to committing the robbery and was charged accordingly. JOLLA opted to accept a plea offer and was sentenced to 15 yrs. state prison with a strike.
