Package Theft Prevention
Package theft has become an increasingly common crime not just in Montebello, but throughout California. There are a number of delivery options that are available to our residents that can reduce the number of packages stolen. Here are some of your options:
Ship your package to a location where someone is there when it arrives. If you are shipping it to your home, make sure someone is there to receive it, such as a relative or a neighbor. If it is an option, ship it to your work.
Some shipping companies will allow you to choose the date and time your package will arrive. If they don't, simply track your package and request an email or text about the status of your delivery. Amazon, for example, will notify you when your package is out for delivery and when it will be delivered. Often times, they will take a picture of where your package was left to show you a proof of delivery.
Require a signature for deliveries so your package is not left unattended on your porch. Some companies will offer alternative delivery options. They can deliver your package to secured locations, including lockers or allow you to pick your package up directly from the carrier.
If there are no other options, provide specific instructions about where the package should be left on the property. Choose a location that conceals the item, so it cannot be seen by people walking or driving by.
Do not have packages delivered while you are going on vacation. Place deliveries on hold until you return from your trip. If you must have a package delivered once again, have someone there to receive it.
Doorbell cameras are a great deterrent as well. They aren't only a deterrent, but they can provide video evidence of a crime that can help police in their investigations as well.
Be alert and report all crime and suspicious activity. If you see a package being stolen from a neighbor's home, call 9-1-1. If you are a victim of package theft, report it to police at 323-887-1313 or file a police report online at https://montebellopd.org/online-reporting.
